Naked Wines Raises A Glass To Festive Sales Record

Drinks website Naked Wine said sales rose rapidly over Christmas after more shoppers did all their festive buying online.

Sales over November and December increased 48 per cent. That took the sales increase in the full year for 2013 to 67 per cent.

It said sales in its fast growing US and Australian markets grew particularly strongly. But it also benefited from a 'surge' in the number of Angel applications - members of the site who pay a monthly subscription in return for lower prices - in the two months to Christmas.

The number of Angel investors increased to more than 200,000, double the number since Autumn 2012.

'The scales have tipped in favour of online shopping. This is the first year that many people did all of their Christmas shopping online. We have seen a considerable boost from the trend,' Rowan Gormley, the Naked Wines founder, told the Daily Telegraph.

Turnover last year exceeded £60 million. It also closed an oversubscribed wine bond last September, raising £5 million and a $10 million dollar round of private equity funding in March.

Last month it earmarked £50 million investment to invest in independent wine makers in the coming years.
