Pound Shop War Goes Online

The clash of the pound stores that has dominated many high streets has shifted online with the first two ever pound sites opening in the same week.

Poundshop.com will open at midnight tonight and is a venture being launched by Poundland co-founder Steve Smith. The site, which will ask shoppers to spend a minimum of £20, has been supported by Yorkshire-based, family run chain Poundworld.

However, the the plan has been gazumped by HereForAPound.com which has been launched just days ahead of Poundshop.com by husband and wife entrepreneurs Donna and Mark Baker.

HereForAPound.com's managing director Donna Baker told the Western Morning News: 'It’s a really exciting time and online shoppers have been waiting for this for quite a while. The phenomenon of pound shopping in the UK is now a part of many shoppers’ regular spending habits. This, combined with the huge rise in online shopping, made us realise there was a huge gap in the market for an online pound shop.'

HereForAPound.com is charging £4.50 for delivery and aims to turnover £4 million in its first year, according to Western Morning News. Baker said a trial in October revealed an average spend of £19 per shopping trip which is three to four times the basket size at an average pound shop.

Axminster Carpets chairman Stephen Boyd and Axminster's HR and customer service director Sam Mickleburgh are both board directors at HereForAPound.com.
