Morrisons Launches 'Innovation Den' To Tease Out New Technology

Supermarket Morrisons has launched a ‘Dragons' Den’ style innovation hub that will allow technology suppliers and entrepreneurs to pitch ideas.

The project is a bid to improve its technology capabilities as it prepares a major online push and attempts to compete with rivals.

Last week Tesco culled 50 staff as it seeks to rewire its business for the digital age. Chief executive Phil Clarke said: ‘Becoming a multichannel leader is about more than just putting iPads into stores. It needs investment in new types of skills.'

Morrisons has begun inviting technology firms into its office to pitch ideas and innovations to the staff who would end up using it, according to Retail Week magazine. Successful firms will get to work with the supermarkets staff to develop and then pitch ideas to he chain’s IT leadership teams.

Wincor Nixdork and Fujitsu were among the firm five suppliers to pitch in what is expected to be a quarterly event.

Morrisons emerging technologies manager Chris Allen told the magazine that the grocer would push ahead with more digital and technological strategies as customers became more accepting of them.
