Easyjet founder Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou has set up a new website easyFoodstore.com and is poised to secure his first site.
The site, in the traditional orange 'easy' livery, bears the message 'Coming soon' with a photo of Stelios.
It is not yet clear whether the plan will centre on the website, for example with a delivery service, or on food outlets. Although The Times newspaper reported on Saturday (£) that his trademark applications are so far more similar to that for Sainswbury's local and do not so far include applications that would indicate food delivery.
The newspaper said Stelios was warned years ago by a retail expert that delivery was a loss maker for supermarkets because they charges the same price for a product whether customers walked in to the store or it was sent to their doorstep by a delivery van.
The Sunday Telegraph said today that Stelios will shortly announce the location of his first store. It said there may be a gap for another store similar to discounters Aldi and Lidl as the main stores begin to struggle and the market polarises.
