John Lewis Online Sales Surge As Shoppers Get In The Summer Mood

John Lewis said its online sales bounced back after two weeks in the doldrums amid the soaring temperatures of the summer heatwave.

Sales in the week to July 27 increased 24.7 per cent, more than two and a half times the rate of the previous week. Total online sales in the 26 weeks to the same day increased 17.2 per cent.

John Lewis said customers found an 'increased appetite' for shopping as they found time to buy summer clothes and accessories in the belief that the heat wave might continue.

Total sales at the chain increased 13 per cent, from a decline in the previous two weeks and compared to an increase of 6.6 per cent in the 26 week period.

Earlier in the month many customers avoided the stores and others opted to head for parks or for the beach rather than shop online amid the hot weather.
