Britain’s rival online pound stores were unable to cope with demand on Thursday night after a television programme charting their launch led to a surge in traffic.
The DoS (Denial of Service) crash meant both HereForAPound.com and Poundshop.com collapsed for a period of time after their systems were unable to cope with traffic volumes. It is understood that HereForAPound.com had 20,000 shoppers with active shopping baskets at one point.
HereForADay.com is understood to have been down for about an hour. But it was back up soon after telling one concerned customer 'sales were coming through ok' via its Twitter feed.
But Poundshop.com - which is backed by Poundland founder Steve Smith and pound shop giant Poundworld - struggled to resurrect its site until later the following day.
'We’ve been working through the night to get the site back up and running. We are sorry for any inconvenience. We will keep you informed,' it said in a statement on Friday. It appeared to be working well again later that day.
The pair of rivals launched during a 10-day rush to get online that also saw the appearance of PoundPanda.co.uk. HereForAPound.com was first and launched by managing director Donna Baker and her husband Mark.
PoundPanda.co.uk collapsed soon after its launch complaining of unexpectedly high traffic volumes and has not traded again since. Poundshop.com also stumbled on the day of its launch as demand surged but was operating again hours later.
