British Spend £1 In Every £5 Online

Britons spent almost £1 in every £5 online during October as consumers geared up for an online Christmas.

The British Retail Consortium said 18.3 per cent of spending excluding food is now spent through desktop PCs, tablets and smartphones, the most in the 23 months of its online monitor.

Online sales in October increased 12.1 per cent compared to a rise of 2.6 per cent, the BRC said.

Overall, clothing sales fell for the first time since March while purchases of homewares increased as people spruced up their homes instead of their wardrobes.

'It's encouraging to see [total retail] growth heading in the right direction again after a disappointing slowdown in September. Much of the improvement was driven by sustained demand for new games and gadgets, and there was also a strong showing for home accessories and textiles,' said Helen Dickinson, director general at the British Retail Consortium.
